A recent study commissioned by a financial institution revealed that an astonishing 91% of older Canadians want to stay in their homes long after retirement. And why wouldn’t you?
Here are just a few ideas to make home life easier:
Install grab bars and railing. Grab bars near the shower and toilet offer stability, maneuverability and an opportunity to rest if needed. Railings on the stairs and in other areas of the home provide added support as well. The installation process for both grab bars and railings require an expert handyman to ensure they are weight bearing and stylish at the same time
Replace cabinet and door handles. Changing all cabinet and door handles to D handles makes opening doors easier, particularly for those dealing with arthritis. Traditional doorknobs are difficult to grasp and twist so this small and reasonable modification makes a huge difference
Make showering safe and convenient. Adding a corner seat provides a safe, slip-free place to rest while showering and some stability while cleaning those hard to reach places
- Enhance light fixtures for improved visibility
- Move light switches and electrical plugs
- Add a seat near the stairs. Walking up stairs can be tiring and hard on sore joints. Adding a bench or a decorative chair by the stairs and on the porch can be stylish and practical all at the same time
- Install ramps over stairs
- Raise toilet seats. Raised toilet seats help prevent accidents and falls in the bathroom and make it easier on joints and muscles
- Widen doorways. Narrow doorways are difficult for walkers, wheelchairs or anyone assisting loved ones in their homes. Widening the doorways to at least 36” provides more maneuverability and reduces the risk of falls
- Install pull-down or pull-out shelves. High and hard to reach cabinets can be made more accessible with pull-down shelves. Pull-out shelves make lower cabinets easier to reach without straining joints and muscles
